New Year's Eve is an exciting time for most of us. It heralds in the new year and we think about what we wish for the year ahead.
If you are wanting to do something different to celebrate this year, why not catch a heritage train to Sydney, watch the fireworks on board a six hour harbour cruise and then catch the sleeper train back. Organised by the Canberra Railway Museum, the "Federal City Express" leaves Canberra each year to experience the fireworks in Sydney without the parking or accommodation issues.
Before I go any further, an experience like this isn't cheap. At $1350 a ticket, this could be a deal breaker for some or an experience not to be missed for others.
Leaving Canberra at 9:15am on the 31st of December, you spend a leisurely day on the train relaxing (or napping) before the big night ahead. The train arrives in Sydney at 4:30pm with time to explore Darling Harbour before hopping on the Aussie Magic catamaran around 7pm for a night to remember out on the water.
There will be champagne and canapés to start the night while you take in the view and entertainment on the water before enjoying the selection from a standing buffet dinner. While waiting for the 9pm fireworks, watch the boat parades line up for their vantage points or have a dance to the DJ's tunes with your new friends on board. Wine, beer, soft drinks and juice are all included in your package fare. Aussie Magic will then take up their harbour viewing position for the countdown to midnight with a great view of the bridge and the other seven fireworks launching points.

After an exciting evening so close to the action, the cruise will then return to port at Darling Harbour before making your way back to Central Station for the 2:40am departure back to Canberra. You can then sleep your way back to Canberra in your sleeper compartment.
With limited numbers on board, you will need to book early to be part of this exciting trip. Their double berths booked out quickly, with single berths remaining. See their website for how to book and then keep up to date with more details on their Facebook page. If you love trains, have a special occasion or just want to take the hassle out of New Year's Eve, this has all the ingredients to be a memorable evening for all.
