As the year draws to a close, the hunt is on to find the best place to celebrate New Year's Eve in Adelaide. Celebrations in the city have been a tradition since the first NYE in Adelaide, and are particularly popular for families with children. Others head to the coast for the cooling breezes of the Semaphore foreshore , Glenelg, Yankalilla and Normanville, or Victor Harbor.

This year the City of Adelaide is fighting back with their free New Year's Eve Party 2017 in Elder Park. You'll enjoy free entertainment for all ages, fantastic international street food from an array of food trucks and vendors, and two massive free fireworks shows on the River Torrens.

The New Year's Eve 2017 action gets underway on Sunday December 31 from 6pm along the grassy banks of the River Torrens with a totally new Kids Zone. The Kids Zone features a full family entertainment program on the Street Theatre Stage, children's shows in the Rastelli tent venue and fun things to do for families in the Nonsense Inc. Big Top. This year's program of roving performance is the largest yet, guaranteed to surprise and delight both children and adults. Find the Kids Zone on the lawns outside Adelaide Convention Centre East and the Home Ground Cafe court .

The 2017 New Year's Eve fireworks will be bigger and more spectacular than ever. The first fireworks will kick off at 9pm for those who want an early night, then the main show lights up the sky in Adelaide at the stroke of midnight. Both fireworks displays will be set to a sensational soundtrack from local music producer Tim Whitt. Lord Mayor of Adelaide Martin Haese said the live music program at this year's event would be a celebration of Adelaide's status as UNESCO City of Music.

The City of Adelaide is committed to providing support and opportunities to our local musicians, and Lonely Planet just named Adelaide as Australia's live music city the Lord Mayor said. Adelaide has been globally recognised for its local music scene and we'll be celebrating some of our finest homegrown talent on New Year's Eve with South Australian acts that range from electronic, blues and soul, indie pop, and world music sounds. Bringing in the New Year at Elder Park has become a tradition for many friends and families. It will be a great night for everyone, young and old, so I invite you to come along and settle yourself in for a night of celebration and entertainment.

There's a huge line-up of free performances at Elder Park for the New Year's Eve party. Here are some of the highlights that you can look forward to from 7pm:
  • a spectacular dance performance by Adelaide-based Aboriginal dance group Yellaka
  • Fresh 92.7 Jump Start winner CARZi with her high energy live DJ set on the stage
  • three-piece band The Wanderers bring shredding guitar riffs, dreamy harmonies and funky bass to the Rotunda Stage
  • 2016 crowd favourite Electric Fields
  • Zkye and the GuyZ rocking out the crowd with their classic soul, rock and pop tunes
  • Adelaide producer and DJ Tim Whitt, spinning tunes across the evening

  • The 9pm fireworks display will be launched from the River Torrens and the Urban Beach at Pinky Flat, while the midnight fireworks will be launched from the footbridge, River Torrens and Pinky Flat. For the safety of the public, the Adelaide Oval footbridge will be closed at times during the two huge fireworks displays. The first bridge closure is at 8:30pm, with the River Torrens footbridge reopening at 9:20pm. The bridge will remain open for the Adelaide Oval Big Bash Cricket crowd to return, and close again at 11pm for the midnight fireworks display.

There's free public transport in Adelaide from 5pm on New Year's Eve, so why drive? Road closures will be in effect and parking will be limited. If you walk to Elder Park, keep an eye open for the Art of Christmas Creative Tree Trail .

Head over to the City of Adelaide website for more information, or the Facebook event page - and have a Happy New Year.
