New Year's Eve 2012/13 @ Mooloolaba

For a fun, safe and family friendly New Year's Eve you can't look past Mooloolaba . The Sunshine Coast's premium tourist destination really turns it up a notch to ring in the new year. The 40,000 people this free event brought in last year can't be wrong.

The celebrations begin from 4pm and runs until midnight with a long list of live entertainment and fun activities for all ages. I've been along in previous years and have been impressed with how the event is handled. Mooloolaba Esplande is fully fenced off - you can't bring alcohol or glass inside so it tends to keep those trouble makers out. Needless to say intoxicated patrons cannot enter the event site.

The kids will have their own special afternoon with several movie screenings beginning from 5.40pm with Happy Feet 2 , followed by a screening of The Lorax (6.25pm) and finally a performance by Alvin and the Chipmunks (7.10pm). The first musical performance of the night starts at 7.30pm with DJ Prazz and followed by Freak Morice at 7.55pm. The first fireworks display will go off at 8.30pm - perfect timing for families with young kids not quite ready to stay up to the midnight mark. If you're bringing kids in, consider a visit to the information centre at Loo With A View first up. They'll have wristbands available for identification if they get lost.

Aussie alternative rock bank You Am I will perform at 8.45pm on the Main Stage, followed by Mitch Davis and the Dawn Chorus (10.05pm) and finally Aussie rock band Stonefield (11.05pm) right up to the big bang at midnight.

The fireworks in the past have been awesome - they're set off from multiple barges just off Mooloolaba Beach. Off in the distance you can see other fireworks displays happening but they never last as long as the Mooloolaba show. Grab a spot on the sand with your friends and ring in the new year with a wonderful display.

Besides the music and movies there are also plenty of carnival-style rides to jump on and food stalls to visit. The party doesn't have to end at midnight either - consider heading into O'Malley's Irish Bar , even the Mooloolaba Wharf Tavern if you're in for a party.
