New to Canberra, I love exploring this city and the secrets that it holds with my family.
Two Concerts, Two Fireworks - One Huge Night

New Year's Eve in the City is one of the highlights of the festive season, held in the heart of Canberra's CBD. Each year the streets fill up for two concerts and two fireworks on the one huge night. Main thoroughfares get blocked off, busloads of people pour in and the city is buzzing with anticipation of the night ahead. Firstly, there is a family friendly, all ages concert held in Civic Square to start the night, with big name acts to get the party started. The 9pm fireworks then light up the sky overhead, before the concert continues on until the next fireworks at midnight. For those who prefer something more high energy however, there is also an all ages dance party in Garema Place nearby, which also has views of the spectacular pyrotechnic display at midnight.
Of course you can go out to dinner, find a cosy pub or have a picnic down by Lake Burley Griffin to bring in the new year, however if you want to be in the thick of things this NYE - then follow the crowds into the city and prepare yourself for a big one. Yes, it's going to be huge!
As the city starts to cool down after a hot Summer day, the party starts to heat up at Canberra's Civic Square for NYE in the City. Starting at 7pm, the headlining act for this year's concert is the Potbelleez, as well as local party bands Heuristic who will rock out with some covers, local street funk brass group Brass Knuckle Brass Band and local party band Nostalgia. This combination of acts is guaranteed to get the toes tapping and kids and adults up on their feet. This family friendly concert leads up to the spectacular 9pm fireworks, which can be seen from all over the city to the "ooh's" and "aaah's" of kids and adults alike. After these earlier fireworks, families often start to pack up to get the little ones home to bed, happy they have experienced the magic of the New Years Eve fireworks. This concert then rocks on until after the midnight fireworks, for the rest of the people (and party animals!) left in the audience. See all the details here.

Looking for something with a bit more high energy this New Years Eve? After the 9pm fireworks, why not head on over to Garema Place nearby, where the party kicks up a gear at Bass in the Place. There is no need to go to a nightclub this New Years Eve and pay a cover charge, as this free dance party is all you need for a night of partying. It is also designed to be a safe event for all ages to attend, as it is alcohol free and glass free. Up on the stage DJ'ing will be Brisbane duo ODD MOB as well as DJ's and producers BNOR, Exposure and Tyson. This epic line up will continue on past the midnight fireworks and keep the beats going until 1am. Dance the night away and enjoy mix of electro mash ups, dance music and hip-hop. See all the details here.

Also on the night there will be food trucks to fill up those empty stomachs and provide some energy food for the dancing ahead. Enjoy the smells and tastes of Mr Papa's Peruvian Street Food, Tikka Stand, Capital Woodfired Pizza, Pure Gelato and stay awake with Black Magic Coffee. After each fireworks display and at the end of the night, there will be thousands of people leaving the city at once. For details on the Nightrider bus, where to park, road closures and all the details of the event, see here. NYE in the City and Bass in the Place are two huge events that would be enough individually on their own - but together on the one night makes this is an impressive New Year's Eve celebration. Why not hop between the two events to get the best of both worlds, or just stay in the one place and party into the night with friends. Wherever you spend it...
Happy New Year Canberra!
