Now that Christmas is done, it's time to plan for New Year's Eve. Whether you love seeing in the new year with fireworks, or prefer a more elegant, dinner and dancing, you don't have to trek into the city, because there's options galore in the Blue Mountains.
Penrith Panthers will host two fireworks displays, one at 9pm for families and another at midnight wIth free entry, free parking, and a host of eateries available nearby, along with multiple bars within the Penrith Panthers complex.
For New Year's Eve, there'll be a heap of rides where for $60 you can purchase 50 ride coupons (otherwise $1 each) or for $20 you can purchase an unlimited jumping castle pass, to keep the kids entertained for the night.
If you'd prefer to stay the night, there are rooms available at the Mecure Hotel, which is in the same complex as Penrith Panthers.
The Carrington Hotel in Katoomba will host the Havana Nights event, featuring pre-dinner drinks, canapés, three-course menu with drinks and live music. Tickets are $155 per person and need to be booked ahead of time by calling 02 4782 1111. You can stay at the Carrington Hotel, making it a New Year to remember.
The Avalon Hotel in Katoomba will host the New Year's Eve Supper Club featuring a 5-piece band and three-course dinner with a welcome cocktail on arrival. There are two sittings, an early sitting which is $85 or the later sitting is $100. Call 02 4782 5532 to reserve your table.
The Hydro Majestic Hotel in Medlow Bath will host a New Year's Eve Degustation menu, featuring a five-course menu, a glass of bubbles and live entertainment to be enjoyed whilst gazing over the Megalong Valley. Reservations can be made online and tickets are $159 per person with vegetarian options available.

There is limited availability for the six-course degustation menu at Lillianfells Hotel and Spa, tickets are $189 per person and can be booked online here.
Instead of catching the train home, retire from your evening soirée to your boutique room, and start 2018, waking up to a hearty breakfast, looking out over distant views of eucalyptus-lined valleys. You can bring a picnic, otherwise, there'll be a barbecue hosted by Wallerawang Baseball Club, and Big Daddy's Pizza. The Wallerawang fireworks will kick off at 9pm.
It's a family orientated event, but if you plan on having a few drinks then why not stay in Lithgow, there are multiple hotel and motel options including three and four-star properties.
If you have a decent set of binoculars, there are a few streets in the mountains that have a direct line of sight to Penrith and Sydney. If it's a clear night, you can see the fireworks on the horizon (albeit, very small) at places like Hawkesbury Lookout on Hawkesbury Road, the hill near the pot shop at Wentworth Falls (park in Tablelands Road), and Queens Road, Lawson.
If drinking and fireworks aren't your thing or it's raining (which is forecast), then head to United Cinemas, Katoomba and catch the latest movies; Star Wars: The Last Jedi (3.30pm, 6;30pm, 8:20pm), Downsizing (4:25pm), The Greatest Showman (2:20pm, 7pm), Jumanji (6pm, 7pm), Paddington 2 (4pm), Ferdinand (4:50pm) or Coco (1:45pm).
