I was fortunate enough to attend the first New Venture Lab titled "Just Do It", hosted by Kevin Malcahy from Mix 102.3. The first session featured Andre Eikmeier, CEO and Co-founder of Vinomofo and Richard Sauerman; known as 'the brand guy'.

Andre Eikmeier of Vinomofo was an out of work actor/singer when he decided to start a Video Production Company with a friend whilst teaching himself how to edit. Andre tried and failed with many other business ventures before commencing a wine selling site on Facebook. Later an investor friend offered $200,000 to help launch their own wine selling business and within 3 months it had worked. Even though he had no business model he had gained the trust of his audience who believed in the site, the business and what it stood for. Andre started with a 'minimum viable product' and believes that you should get to market quickly, listen and learn from your customers and don't be fear based. Don't wait for bureaucracy and red tape; make it happen, be flexible and change if you have to.

Richard Sauerman is known as 'The Brand Guy' and has worked with some huge corporations including Coca Cola, Arnotts and Microsoft. Richard studied English and Philosophy at University and believes creating a brand is like creating poetry. He feels that companies are too fixated on growth and they need to examine what they are about, what they stand for, what is their truth, their purpose and the contribution they will make to the world. This is the basis for establishing a 'brand'. Richard believes that brand is all 'heart' rather than 'head', and that it's important to be consistent, 'stick to your guns' and keep the message simple. The long-term goal should not be money but to build a business that people love.

I found both speakers to be insightful, honest, engaging and open. Members of the public were invited to ask their own questions after each speaker. New Venture Lab is a great initiative of Flinders University and the New Venture Institute. So if you are considering starting up a new business, these sessions can give you a practical insight into the business and entrepreneurial world by experts in their field. And remember: "Success is walking from failure to failure with no loss of enthusiasm"- Winston Churchill.
