After going to North Stradbroke Island for years what new things can you discover?

1 - There are several lakes on Straddie including the resilient Blue Lake.

According to the Straddie Camping website, close to the end of December, 2013, a bushfire started as a grassfire that burned in the Blue Lake area for 14 days, where it took over 60% or 16,200 hectares of land on North Stradbroke.

Parking and hiking at Blue Lake allows you to see the fortitude of Mother Nature. The walk is a testament to the endurance of life on the island.

As you walk past the burnt tree trunks you can see the trees regaining their life with new leaves and branches taking shape. New ground covers, ferns, and some flowering plants can be seen.

The enduring Grass trees still stand tall and many are growing flower spikes right now. The tiny birds who love to feed on the seeds, sadly are missing in action. Ants and tiny lizards are present so life is returning. It is most inspiring to see.

2 - Once you finish the hike and if you are in a 4 wheel drive, continue east along Tazi road for a short distance until you get to Tripod road, an unmarked 4w drive track to the left (use a map if unsure-on the WeekendNotes map it is called North Stradbroke Island track) . This will take you up the middle of the island where you will emerge on the East Coast road. The track is well travelled and you may have to back track if you come across other drivers, adding to the adventure.

You get to see more of the interior and the fire damage. Bare spots and sand show a distinct lack of underbrush. You can look across to the radar tower, nestled in the middle of the island, and catch glimpses of the ocean here and there.

3 - Stradbroke Island Ferries has some great deals going on. You ferry across to the island and do lunch for 2 for $105 during the week, returning the same day. You can choose and download menus from their website. The restaurant of your choice will have a section of the menu that you can choose from.

The Look in Point Lookout has amazing Focaccia sandwiches but drinks are not included. You are still saving at least $30 on your ferry trip along with another $30 - $40 on lunch, a great value.

If you prefer there is a Saturday Sunrise Special. You go over early on the 5:30am ferry, spend the day and return later on, another great deal with a fare of only $85 return from Cleveland to Dunwich and back.

Check the website for conditions and dates.

There is so much beauty on this island and always new things to discover.
