You can always expect something real, raw and new at New Theatre.

The 2014 season comprises of eight fantastic plays and musicals. Tickets cost between $17 and $32, and subscriptions are also available to purchase. Read on to see what's on.

11 FEBRUARY – 8 MARCH 2014
Privates on Parade by Peter Nichols is presented in association with the Sydney Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras. This is a story about a flamboyant Captain 'Auntie' Terri Dennis, who takes an immediate liking to a group of shy military misfits. Having a genuine compassion for these sailors, he leads these sexually inexperienced young men as they transition from boys to men. This charming coming-of-age comedy comprises of songs, dance, blokes in dresses, and a bit of naughtiness. It explores darker political themes and personal experiences of being alone, feeling terrified, and falling in love.

18 MARCH – 19 APRIL 2014
Christopher Sergel's highly praised adaption of Harper Lee's To Kill A Mockingbird brings to life the story about compassion and humanity. It tells the story of a six-year-old, Scout Finch, whose father defends a young black man charged with the rape of a white woman. Eventually, it is Scout's audacity that bring hope to a damaged community.

29 APRIL – 24 MAY 2014
Maestro is a play that has been adapted from the novel by Peter Goldworthy. It tells the story of a young boy, Paul Crabbe, who takes piano lessons from Eduard Keller. Although Paul does not like his teacher at first, their relationship develops as Paul grows from an egotistical teenager into a self-questioning man. Through music, Keller's experiences and his understanding of human nature, Paul learns about life and his knowledge of the world grows. Exploring themes of adolescence and growing up, this play is about love, betrayal, loyalty and guilt.

3 – 28 JUNE 2014
Why Torture is Wrong, and the People Who Love Them by Christopher Durang tells the story of Felicity who is in crisis. She marries a terrorist (or so she thinks) after a drunken blackout. She thinks her father's hobby of butterfly collecting is a front for something else, and that her mother's probably insane. This is guaranteed to be hilarious,

8 JULY – 9 AUGUST 2014
What do you get when you combine a comedy, a tragedy and a murder mystery? The answer is The Book of Days by Lanford Wilson. Set in a provincial Missouri town, the town patriarch dies in a hunting accident. Bookkeeper Ruth suspects foul play and is on a mission to uncover the truth, which causes conflict with the powerful people in the community. Cast as Joan of Arc in the production of Saint Joan, Ruth starts to embody Joan in her search for the truth. This play delves into the uncertainty of morality, identity and religion.

19 AUGUST – 13 SEPTEMBER 2014
Wolf Lullaby by Hilary Bell turns on the themes of parental guilt and responsibility. Set in a remote town in Tasmania, a small child is murdered. Suspicion falls on nine-year-old Lizzie and her mother, Angela, believes her daughter is guilty. Does she protect her daughter and ignore what her intuition tells her? Or does she hand Lizzie over to the police?

7 OCTOBER – 8 NOVEMBER 2014
Ready for some laughs? Harvest by Richard Bean is "a comic banquet that will sate even the most jaded appetite" (The Age). It covers almost a century in the lives of a Yorkshire pig-farming family who are fighting to protect their livelihood.

18 NOVEMBER – 20 DECEMBER 2014
The last show in 2014 is Sweeney Todd, The Demon Barber of Fleet Street by Stephen Sondheim. This musical thriller tells the story of Benjamin Barker, aka Sweeney Todd, who returns to London after 15 years transportation on a crime he didn't commit. He finds out that his wife has committed suicide after being raped by the brutal judge who transported him. Vowing to revenge on the judge, he opens a barbershop and starts to slit the throats of his customers. Then his accomplice and piemaker, Mrs Lovett, would bake them into pies. Regarded as one of the greatest theatrical creations, this musical is funny, moving and exciting.
