Some readers may think of op' shops as dark, dusty places full of piles of disorganised, dirty, unloved items that smell like mothballs. Those readers would be very surprised to find the Salvos Hope Op Shop feels more like a bright, clean, modern retail environment than a second hand store.
It's been open in Anthony Street in West End for a little over a month. So let's have a look at what you can expect to find when you pop in to Salvos Hope Op Shop.
Arriving The shop is easy to find and clearly signed. There's a free car park for shoppers to use, bus stops nearby, and a friendly, warm welcome from the volunteer staff when you walk through the door. The white board message also welcomes you inside, where you're immediately struck by how tidy everything looks.
Cleanliness There is not a speck of dust in sight and considering how much construction dust is being kicked up in West End right now, that's no mean feat. The displays are orderly and uncluttered, making it easy to see and find things. Salvos Hope Op Shop is clean as a whistle, everywhere you look: windows, walls, surfaces and most of all the objects for sale.
Quality There are two floors of well organised displays that feel like they're straight out of a high end retail store. You'll find items grouped by type and colour. Many of them appeared to be never or rarely used and all had been thoroughly cleaned before being put on the shelves. If you're looking for something specific and they have it, you'll find it with ease and without having to scrabble through a jumble of objects.
Variety and Vintage I'd wager you could find something for everyone at Salvos Hope Op Shop and that's coming from someone who does have a few 'hard to buy for' people in the family. Tools, toys, homewares, craft and sewing, plenty of clothing, a special section dedicated to vintage, shoes, so many superb bags, furniture, frames, electronics, kitchenware, decorations, crockery and so, so much more.
Friendly Service The warmth doesn't just stop at the welcome at Salvos Hope Op Shop it extends throughout your visit. The staff are friendly and helpful without being pushy. The counter service is cheerful, quick and efficient. All of our questions were answered with a smile and a willingness to help. You get the feeling the volunteers really enjoy being there.
Feel-Good Shopping Salvos Hope Op Shop is a charity store run by unpaid volunteers and people from the work for the dole scheme under the guidance of a paid manager. So not only do you have the fun of exploring and snapping up bargains and items you can't find anywhere else, you know your money is going to a good cause. Plus, when you buy pre-loved, you're recycling and preventing items from winding up in landfill, so it's a win for the planet too!
