We were treated to some great movies over the summer, with so much to choose from. I hope you managed to get out and about to enjoy some of them. I absolutely loved 'The Dressmaker', a humourous look a rural Australia. Now that some normality of the new year returns to our weekly schedule, you may be interested to see some of my top picks for early 2016. Release dates provided are for Australia.



DAD'S ARMY Release Date February 25

This very popular TV series from the UK is now a funny movie. These bumbling and silly mostly old men, who for various reasons, such as too old or infirm, are not eligible for the regular army. So they take it on themselves to protect their community and coastline from the invading forces. A good one for the men to go along with their mates. British humour at its best.

45 YEARS Release Date February 18
What happens to a couple who after a 45 year marriage begin to question their history and time together? Emotions can become fragile in the retirement years, and when shocking events are sent to test us and change life as we know it. Clever camera work and direction will reveal the unspoken feelings, and tenseness that builds in this film. Here you have fine drama and away winning performances from the delightful Charlotte Rampling and Tom Courtenay.



THE LADY IN THE VAN Release Date March 3
An old lady asks if she can park and live in her van in a young man's driveway in suburban London. She stays for 15 years. It stars the delightful and admirable Dame Maggie Smith, who at 82 years this year, has found time to squeeze in this job between another Downton Abbey series. This remarkable true story explores the relationship and friendship that develops between the two characters. It was filmed at the same house and street where the real events happened. The prospect of changing circumstances and living in your car is a little scary, as it could happen to any of us.



RISEN Release Date February 18
Just in time for Easter is this new biblical story. A non-believer (Joseph Fiennes) is given the role of examining the facts after Jesus is ressurected from his tomb. An explanation must be either provided or contrived, then delivered to the masses in order to prevent an angry mob and ensuing chaos. It's the tale of political propaganda which goes to show nothing changes even after 2,000 years.



THE DAUGHTER Release Date March 17
I like to include an Aussie film in my selections for Weekend Notes readers. This film has a good balance of both American and Australian actors; Paul Schneider, Miranda Otto, Geoffrey Rush and Sam Neil. It's the story of two families; one wealthy and the other not, their interactions and family secrets. Set in a rural town which is greatly impacted by the decisions of the family business. Superb cinematography filmed in our beautiful Snowy Mountains, in the towns of Batlow and Tumut. This film is a suspense skeletons in the closet tale; the kind of angst that rips families apart and will have some members of the audience on the edge of their seat and the rest in tears. Take tissues.



BROOKLYN Release Date February 11
I absolutely adore period movies and especially those set in the 1950s. Imagine leaving your homeland, being so young and alone and arriving in a grand and bewildering city to start a new life. Ellis is a young Irish woman who falls in love with her new home and the young New Yorker who shows it to her. A fabulous innocent love story set in the 1950s, it could be the story of many who were part of post war immigration to America. Look for the detailing in the 1950s costuming and New York scenes. Must see this one with the girls.

THE FINEST HOURS (see 3D version) Release date March 3



The true story of the most daring and courageous rescue in USA coast guard history. Wear your raincoat as seeing this in 3D will make you feel as if you are really there immersed in the middle of the huge waves and thundering storm. A must see for anyone who loves the sea. And do go to a good theatre with full surround sound. This is what a modern cinema experience is all about.
