See Brisbane like never before from the historic, photographic lens of Alfred Henry Elliott in the Exhibition: ]New Light: Photography Now + Then at the Museum of Brisbane from this August.
Imagine being an avid Brisbane photographer for over 50 years and your treasured, collected images of your City laid dormant and unknown in a series of boxes in an inner city house.
That is the artistic tale of amateur Brisbane photographer Alfred Henry Elliott. Elliott who from age 26 captured the people and places of Brisbane. Elliott died in 1954. Years later, in a moment of magic, a number of his photographs were found in several cedar cigar cases under a house in Red Hill in Brisbane.
The boxes contained a treasure trove of nearly 300, priceless glass plate negatives dating from 1890 to 1921 along with the tailboard camera that produced the images. Elliott's early photographs were taken with a large plate camera (the photographs after 1921 were taken with a film camera.
Now you can discover Alfred Henry Elliott's photographic works for yourself in an almost 12-month-long FREE exhibition which runs from 17 August 2024 to 13 July 2025.
Contributing contemporary artists will share their Commissions in response to Elliotts' work at the exhibition and include
Marian Drew , Jo-Anne Driessens, Joachim Froese,
Tammy Law , Carl Warner, Nina White and Keemon Williams.

The Museum of Brisbane is located on Level 3 of the City Hall Building on Ann Street in the Central Business District. The Museum can be accessed via the hall's lift or stairs. You can visit and see the New Light collection from 10am to 5pm daily.
