In times of budget pressures and the circular economy, everything old is new again with more shoppers choosing to visit and purchase from second-hand outlets.

Going to a thrift shop is like taking an unplanned adventure. You never know what you may find with the hope to stumble across a treasure trove of interesting secondhand and lovable items ready for a new life.

This idea of new beginnings is particularly true of the New Hope Op Shop, which sells personal goods and homewares to help support its community outreach programs.

The shop opened on 30 November 2024 by the New Hope Church just in time for Christmas.

The New Hope Shop delivers on that expectation with a selection of quality goods including:
  • Men's, women's, and children's clothes
  • Books, shoes, and hats
  • Bags
  • Children's toys
  • Home decor, linen (sheets, towels, etc) and more

The shop is a clean, single-level basement room. Walking down the small flight of stairs, it's obvious that care has been taken in stocking and displaying the mix of products. (I heard one shopper call out "Peter Alexander pyjamas" in delight as they turned the swivel of the clothes rack to find a designer label piece). There's also a change room if you wish to check style and sizes before you buy.

    Supporting the Community
Each purchase made at the shop directly supports New Hope Care which provides important and needed community services such as:
  • Bus Outreach to the homeless
  • Kings Table community lunches
  • Food outreach to shelters and hostels across Brisbane
  • Emergency food parcels
  • Clothing assistance
  • Referrals to drug rehabilitation Retro to Hope
  • Referrals to job-ready programs

So it's a double deal. Not only do you get a renewed piece but you are also purchasing with purpose. There are also opportunities to volunteer if you would like to get involved with sorting donations, assisting customers, or helping behind the scenes.
