Top 3 new exciting secrets in the McLaren Vale

The McLaren Vale wine region is always a good option to escape from the city. Only 45 minutes from Adelaide, you have many opportunities to enjoy a wonderful day in a beautiful surrounding. This year, several new exiting restaurants have opened their doors. Three of these I would like to introduce to you.

Café MESÖ, McLaren Flat

This British influenced restaurant opened its doors about half a year ago. The owners of the Cellar door "Simply Örganoleptic" had the great idea to extend their offer with a truly traditional British café. During weekdays, they serve exciting theme lunch menus, like on Wednesdays – burgers, on Thursdays – Jacket potatoes and on Fridays - fish favourites. But not to forget their Sunday brunch menu, including the traditional roast, which is available all day long.

Although I am not really a fan of the British kitchen, all the dishes that we tasted were very good. And the price/value can't be better. Most of the dishes, if not all, are under $20 and you stay for sure not hungry. The owners are very enthusiastic and they give their vision of the entire team. It certainly was not our last visit, and I look forward to warm, sunny days where we can enjoy lunch on the beautiful patio.

The restaurant and Cellar door is nestled in a beautiful landscape, far away from any traffic. There is plenty of room to dine indoors or outdoors. In addition, they have plans to create a large playground for kits.

Opening hours:
Wednesday – Sunday, from 11am

Ampika's Kitchen, Willunga

The first Thai restaurant in Willunga opened its doors also only about half a year ago. The chefs in the kitchen are originally from Thailand and cook according to recipes of northern Thailand. This great little place offers traditional Thai cuisine at affordable prices. The décor is funky and cosy with a touch of Thai atmosphere.

The selection of the menu is diverse and is also supplemented with specialties. However, the range of fish and seafood could be a little more, but this should change in the near future. Meat lovers will find many excellent prepared dishes. We opted for the curry cooked without coconut milk, which I never had before. Very healthy and still with great flavour. The salt & pepper chicken from our neighbour looked fantastic too. Maybe we take it on our next visit. Be aware that the restaurant is not licensed and you have to bring your own alcoholic beverages.

Since the host was very friendly and chatty, we spent a culinary and entertaining evening. This great place is a bit hidden, but well worth it to find.

The Artel, McLaren Vale

Located in the heart of McLaren Vale, this new Lounge Bar and Restaurant is a modern and stylish alternative to all the pubs in the area. This urban cocktail bar opened its doors in March 2012 with the concept of bringing the 30's back in town. This unique place is something different in the McLaren Vale's wine region and it feels like set back to the jazz and blues era of the 30's.

As we have visited this special place so far only for an aperitif, we have not yet tried their food. But what we have seen, looked fantastic and the menu includes everything from starters, tapas, platters up to mains and desserts. Recently, they have Curry nights on Wednesday and Rib nights on Friday. And don't miss their live entertainment, which they announce on their Facebook-Site.

Opening hours:
Monday – Thursday, from 9am to 0am
Friday – Saturday, from 9am to 2am
Sunday, from 9am to 0am

This looks interesting. Please tell me that the Sunday Roast is not served on a take-away plate?
