I love slow travel, slow food and discovering new adventures and delicious regional food in new locations. I'm on an indulgent quest and I'd love you to follow at

What better way to while away time on a sunny afternoon?
Never Never Gin Distillery is located in picturesque McLaren Vale, next to Chalk Hill Winery with Cucina di Strada, also on site. When friends and I visited recently, we opted for a self-guided gin tasting and snacks. Another option would have been the fully guided tasting, which includes a tour of the distillery and a take-home gift bag and costs $70.

Having previously booked a table, we were welcomed on arrival at the entrance lobby and shown to a booth inside.

Tables on the outside patio looked inviting and offered a scenic view. Gas heating towers were on standby to cater for the unpredictable chilly temperatures we sometimes experience during summers in SA.

We settled into our booth and were presented with three award-winning gin varieties, with tonic and garnishes, along with tasting notes to guide our experience.

The bar offers local beer and cider as well as gin-based and other cocktails. One member of our party ordered an Oyster Stout from Swell Brewery, and then proceeded to enjoy a second one, so I'm guessing it was good.

My gin tasting friends and I also received a complementary Ginache and tonic. Ginache is a Never Never invention that involves adding juniper gin to vats containing the spare parts from Grenache grapes. I reckon it could catch on.

There seemed to be no shortage of Ginache, so if it does catch on there will be plenty to go around.

Overall, we enjoyed our time at Never Never. I felt there was something missing and I guess that would be the learning experience of a Gin back-story. I'm sure that is provided in the fully guided tasting option. Perhaps I'll go back to Never Never and book in for the upgrade. In the interests of education, of course.

I've never tasted gin and it seems like this would be somewhat of an undertaking at Never Never. More than one visit would be required I think.
