The Neues Palais, which translates to New Palace, is set in Sanssouci Park that is located in Potsdam, around 35km south-west of Berlin.

Commissioned by Frederick the Great, who ruled the Kingdom of Prussia from 1740 until 1786, he had the longest reign of any Hohenzollern king, which is a German royal dynasty.

In 1918, the monarchy fell and the German Kaiser abdicated leaving behind the palace and everything inside it, and this was subsequently turned into a museum. Then in 1945, the internal contents were taken by Soviet troops. The original style furniture has since been put back into its rooms.

You can visit the grounds of the palace for free or make a small donation at one of the many entrances with all funds going towards the upkeep of this vast estate.

The palace is now part of a UNESCO world heritage listed site with ongoing restoration works taking place on the palace ,and surrounding buildings areas. It may be closed at different times throughout the year, so if you plan on visiting its best to check the website beforehand.

The outside view of the building is impressive with hundreds of sculptures all around it. However, the builders did cut corners with things like the external brickwork being fake and painted on to save money - this just adds to the intrigue as only by looking, you don't know what is real or fake.

As you walk around the building, you can see that many of its design features are made to impress its visitors, from the dome that is seen from the outside but has no matching domed roof inside, to the marble and other materials used inside to make it stand out.

Having hundreds of rooms inside also shows the vast wealth that the Kaiser was trying to portray, even though corners were cut to save money.

With such a vast garden area, there is ample space to relax with a picnic and drinks. It is easy to get to from Berlin via a short train ride and getting off at stop Potsdam, Neues Palais. You can check out the train timetable Neues Palais here

Onsite parking is available for a fee.
