Independent wine store offers a drop of difference
Network Wines - One of Brisbane's few independent wine retailers - 235 Sinnamon Rd Jindalee

For a major wine producing country like Australia, there's a distinct lack of independent wine retailers in our major cities. Especially in the suburbs of Brisbane, as the franchise bottle shops continue to dominate the market, finding an independently run shop offering a range of the major retailers can be no easy feat. Luckily for those in the western suburbs, Network Wines in Jindalee is uncorking some of the best boutique wines from family run wineries across the country, including top drops from Tasmania and the best of the Barossa.

Most of Coles and Woolworths bottle shops are filled with their own private labels as well as the range of the major producers, Michael Massey, co-owner of Network Wines explains.

It's because of the major alcohol retailers commitment to stock their many of their own products (and to boost their profit margins) that leaves little opportunity for smaller family run winemakers to get their own products on the shelves, Michael said.

Michael says this homogenisation of wine retailing in Australia comes at the cost of consumers being offered the chance to try quality artisanal wines, produced in smaller batches and many varieties that boast unique complexities. Because of this and his love for a good drop, what began as an idea came to full fruition as Michael and business partner Brendan started putting some feelers out regarding what it would take to open their own boutique wine store in Brisbane.

Michael and business partner Brendan opened the store due to their passion for quality wines and lack of independent wine retailers.

After negotiating with suppliers and gaining licensing, the duo opened a carefully curated range and an inviting store that feels similar to European wine cellar, and its not only wine enthusiasts across the western suburbs are who are benefiting.

Customers find it exciting and sometimes daunting when they visit and see so many unfamiliar labels, Michael said.

Fortunately Michael's extensive knowledge of different wine varieties, both local and international, helps customers pick out the right bottle based upon how much they are looking to spend, their taste preferences, and how to pick a great bottle based upon what's being cooked for dinner.

Don't expect the usual - Network Wines carefully curate their selection from many small run small batch wineries

It's also one of the reasons that Network Wines offer complimentary wine tastings every Friday night from 5pm, introducing locals to great wines that they otherwise wouldn't have tried. From Henry's Drive Shiraz from the SA's Limestone Coast and Margaret River's best chardonnays, each week on the patio at the front of the store several different bottles are popped for customers and passersby to sample and savour, with a large wheel of Brie cheese included!

If you've bemoaned the lack of independent wine retailers in Brisbane, timing a visit to Network Wines on a Friday evening is a great way to learn more about Australian wines and support small growers from some of the country's best wine regions in the process. With such an esteemed global wine making reputation like Australia, a merchant that makes a point to showcase some of Australia's largely undiscovered drops is definitely something worth drinking to.

Network Wines are located at 235 Sinnamon Rd Jindalee QLD in the ALL SPORTS shopping complex.
