There are a few things you don't expect to find in Bulawayo (Zimbabwe's second largest city) and a historical castle is definitely one of them. Nesbitt Castle is an English style castle that looks like its time travelled across the globe to arrive in Modern day Zimbabwe, where its been swallowed by jungle and given that unique Southern African touch. This is probably the most luxurious accommodation you'll find in Bulawayo, and its definitely the most unforgettable.
Driving up to the castle you're greeted by large grassy gardens and dappled light that breaches through the trees and jungle-like vines. The medieval castle looms in the distance and the grounds boast other delights like a giant chess set, British phone boxes, peacocks, and even a pet impala.
When you check in you'll be directed to your room. Pick between rooms like the dungeon, the princess, the crown, the tower, or the turret. The rooms all have different styles, but they try to fit into the castle theme. There are rooms for couples or larger ones that will suit small families. If you visit with a larger group it just means you'll get the option to explore more rooms.
Exploring is an essential part of your stay at Nesbitt Castle. There are trophy rooms, reading rooms, billiards rooms, and more. There are a few twists and turns, so you're best dedicating a little bit of time to checking everything out. Spend some time unwinding with one of the books in the reading room, or head outside to soak up the sun. There's even a pool for when the weather heats up.
The Nesbitt Castle restaurant is silver service, and you'll be treated like a king or queen. Unfortunately the food does feel a little dated, while you'll get a perfectly acceptable meal its unlikely to blow you away.
Nesbitt Castle walks a very fine line between luxury and caricature. There's no denying that the entire concept and set up of the castle is a little strange, but that doesn't stop it from being an incredibly enjoyable place to stay. Even if you start of sceptical, chances are you'll leave Nesbitt Castle firmly in love.
