If you are visiting Amsterdam with kids and need to find somewhere interesting and entertaining to go on a cold and wet day, this is a great family-friendly attraction that allows the kids to burn off some energy, while learning and engaging with some interesting science displays.
Some of the areas covered in the displays include: -
Science throughout the Ages: shows past and present research.
Energise: looks at all the different ways of creating power from nature.
Water Power: the control and manipulation of water.
Journey through the Mind: a look into your brain.
and several more set out over 3 levels.
Everyone can join in and enjoy the attractions and visiting without kids you're still able to play with all the different science exhibits, though if visiting on the weekend, as we did, it gets relatively busy so, you may have a wait to use the favourite displays.
The best time to visit and avoid crowds is on weekdays during school term times, this would allow you to have more time to interact with everything and enjoy more of it as there doesn't seem to be a limit on the number of visitors on the weekends
Like most attractions that we've visited in Amsterdam, it's not cheap but will give you at least four hours of entertainment if you go around all of the displays. You can buy an 'I Amsterdam City Card', which gives you free entry and allows you to visit over 70 other attractions that are included in the price; cards are in 24-hour time blocks.
The museum is only a short fifteen-minute stroll from Amsterdam Centraal and is easy to get to using public transport with a short walk, if going by car there is parking nearby but being Amsterdam it is expensive, though some car parks offer a discount to museum visitors, current details can be found on the museum website.
Visiting with bags and jackets you can store them in secure lockers on the ground floor for free, you just need a euro to put in the locker that you get back when you pick up your belongings.
If you don't fancy going through a science centre, there is a cafe on the roof that you can go into without paying and can be accessed either via a lift in the lobby or stairs on the outside. Once at the top you get an awesome view of the city
