Nelson 382

When I was young I thought I knew everything. As I grew older I realised I didn't know quite as much as I thought. Now that I am older still, I realise I hardly know anything!

I've driven along Burwood Highway often over the past 50 years and especially since around 2000 have driven every day or second day down the Burwood Highway towards Melbourne, passing Knox City on my left and then crossing Stud Road. I didn't take much notice of what was the other side of Stud Road in my efforts to get where I was going any time which was usually the city.

That brings me to this afternoon. Having moved back closer to the city but having a special connection with the area of Ferntree Gully and Wantirna South, I decided I needed to pamper myself with a special meal in the area I love. I counted all the restaurants I could remember on my fingers and then got in the car and drove, still without deciding.

Nearing Stud Road from the city end, a large black and white sign took my eye. Nelson 382. I made a quick right turn into what appeared to be the Old Stud Road and into the parking area surrounding Nelson 382. I'm always in for a nice surprise, especially at my age.

I was soon to learn that Nelson 382 has been located at this address for more than 20 years. Where have I been all this time, I hear you ask. I've been asking myself the very same thing all day.

The small white door at Nelson 382 opens into a welcoming area, and I was quickly attended to and seated near the large window. A lovely carafe of water appeared on my table almost by magic.

Nelson 382 has ceiling to floor windows around most sides. This makes for natural lighting inside the entire dining area, but the fluted lampshades coupled with the "cottage" style tables add to the feeling of entering your own dining room or parlour. The seats with rounded backs and tied cushions are so comfortable. Nelson 382 is licenced. BYO bottled wine in dining area only.

There's a special Spring Menu to delight the tastebuds. Looking at the main menu I found a rather scrumptous description of Nelson's Gourmet Burger. Something to think about for my next visit, I tell myself.

I was very impressed with the lovely napkin (serviette) that was provided, It was large and "real" fabric. As you can tell I take note of the small but important things.

My choice of meal came from the entree menu and I wasn't disappointed. My Smoked Salmon stack was, without a doubt, absolutely delicious. The entree sized serve was ample and satisfied me as a mains with at least three double layers of smoked salmon, greens, capers and wasabi, served with crisp thin pastry squares throughout. My description doesn't do it justice.

For a sweet, I chose icecream and sorbet served in a Brandy Snap basket. This topped off the meal superbly. This cost $12.50.

The mains selection covers all tastes, and a freshly baked Cob Loaf (serving up for 4 people) costs $7.95.

When I visited there was quite a large party going on in the Atrium which is a lovely secluded area with hanging baskets and reminicsent of something you see in travel brochures. Another party were in the dining room at the same time as I was writing up my notes. It was the quietness and relaxing attitude in the dining room that really appealed to me - so often in restaurants of any size, the noise begins to grate. Nothing like that here though.

There's a children's menu. A great selection of specialty teas and coffees.

For the romantic and nostalgic, there are cosy little Nooks which allow privacy for those who wish to celebrate their special occasion.
