is the last play for the 2019 season of Castle Hill Players at the Pavilion Theatre. The play written by Jessica Swale was first performed in 2015 and provides an insight into the life of first actress on the English stage. The characters in the story are real and it is based on historical facts of London during 1664 -1685. Bawdy ballads and a degree of farce are thrown in for fun and the language has been modernised.

The action takes place in Whitehall Palace and Drury Lane Theatre London which are portrayed by the clever set design and beautiful costuming. The cast was large, and they all seemed to be having as fun as the audience. Tiffany Hoy played with a sassy cheekiness and had a great rapport with Paul Sztelma as King Charles II.

The play is not suitable for children as the humour is quite ribald at times, with plenty of dirty ditties and double entendres. Satire, sarcasm and physical comedy add to the farcical nature of the show and the music and dancing was very entertaining as well as catchy. An enjoyable evening was had by all although it does finish a little late due to a run time of two and a half hours including interval.

paved the way for women to take their rightful place on the stage, was she the first feminist?
