This May, the legendary tale of Ned Kelly comes to Bendigo in 'NED - A New Australian Musical'.
This anticipated world premiere musical is conceived by celebrated composer Adam Lyon (King Kong - Global Creatures) and directed by the accomplished Gary Young (Les Miserables, Miss Saigon – Cameron MacKintosh Australia).
It will be staged at the brand new Ulumbarra Theatre complex (formerly the site of the historic Sandhurst Gaol) which houses a stunning state-of-the-art 1000 seat auditorium.
NED will be one of Ulumbarra Theatre's first productions. It will play for a strictly limited season from May 22 to 31 (6 shows only) and coincides with the current 'Imagining Ned' exhibition at Bendigo Art Gallery.
When his father dies, Ned becomes the man of the house at 12 years old. His first arrest is at 14. By 16 he is serving time in Pentridge for receiving a stolen horse.
Ned's life takes a catastrophic turn when his mother Ellen is falsely accused of attempted murder of a police officer. Ned takes to the bush with his brother Dan, and friends Steve and Joe, with plans to avenge this injustice.
The boys are pursued fervently by the police. When they finally come upon each other, three policemen are killed one fateful night at Stringybark Creek. Suddenly our Ned has killed a man. Police officers, no less. Yet rather than being condemned, his legend begins to grow.
Featuring a stunning cast of actors and singers this world premiere musical is highlighted with hauntingly beautiful melodies, raucous humour and a moving orchestral score.
