How to be successful as a writer
The label "content writer" refers to a rather new concept within the contemporary job market. This kind of career involves crafting original articles with the intent of posting them on websites. Content writing opportunities have multiplied exponentially during the last decades as the internet has reached all households and the number of websites has boomed.

For various reasons like jobs shortage, creative career aspirations or the dream of becoming a millionaire overnight, many people take on writing for the web. Hence, there are thousands of people out there who call themselves content writers. This does not mean they are by any means skilled professionals of this job. So what does being a professional content writer actually mean? What qualities are necessary in order to have a successful freelance content writing career?

Linguistic proficiency

Although it is not enough, a very good accuracy level, a rich vocabulary in the language you write your articles in as well as deep knowledge of text organization principles are sine qua non requirements. Just because you get along in a basic conversation in English when you travel abroad, this does not mean you can write professional articles in the most commonly used language of the World Wide Web. There is no other more efficient way of putting off readers and chasing possible article buyers away than by making many typos and writing long incoherent sentences.

Passion for research

Being a web content writer involves a lot of research. Although it is advisable to stick to the fields you know best, there are times when you have to take a job outside your niche of expertise. If you don't make the difference between an iPhone and an iPod, you certainly don't have anything to say in the gadgets area. However, if your hobby is gardening, you might write some real gems simply by wording your personal experience. No matter which topic you write on, your piece must be informative. Even if you think you are an expert in the area, make a bit of research and check your facts.

Content writing can be a hobby or it can turn into a real career. Both ways, it requires dedication and perseverance, just like other creative jobs. Do you go to the gym on a weekly basis? Make time for writing at least every second day, if you want to keep your mind in shape.

Self promotion skills

Work is usually project-based in this area. Therefore, you have to promote yourself in order to see a constant flow of inquiries. Create yourself a website or a blog; clearly state what type of services you are providing and your rates; use the social media channels appropriately; connect with like-minded people from across the globe; keep an open mind.

These are the basis of a successful web content writing career. Respecting those principles might seem difficult at the beginning, but only this way you will achieve your professional goals and make a name for yourself in the infinite and crowded virtual world.

Hi Mihaela, thank you for this article. I will come back and read it in full soon. I am writing, and slowly starting to earn an income from my writing. I am talking about very slowly earning a living. Without content I am not going to earn anything so I have been spending a bit of time writing lately.

I find I use content articles to be more prolific as a WeekendNotes writer, so I might combine my content articles with places, cafes, stays and various other reviews, I really related to passion for research the difference between writing on an unfamiliar and familiar topic - it just had insights I couldn't have possibly realised or else wanted to see someone else have an appreciation of.
