Recently some friends and I were in the city for a movie, and afterwards one suggested we eat at a new Indian place she had discovered. Not too keen on Indian fare, I agreed with hesitation and we soon arrived at the central location in downtown Adelaide. had only just opened a few weeks before, and was looking modern, fresh and trendy.

This venue is a cocktail bar with food available as an accompaniment to your drink selections. A lunch menu is also available. It is not set up with restaurant dining tables and chairs. The decor is casual and intimate. The seating is on stools with small occasional tables. The room is a dog leg shaped area, meaning it has lots of angles and is long and skinny which would help to cut down the noise when a crowd is there. I could envisage it as a pumping place on a weeknight after work to relax with colleagues for a drink on the way home. There is a wide selection of wines, beers and also a cocktail menu.

I wrongly assumed that being gluten free there would be not much on offer for me, however I was pleasantly surprised to learn all the curries are gluten free, as are some other items on the menu. I decided on the sesame chicken pancakes which are made from chickpea flour. These are shown in the photo above with a plate of tandoor cooked beef. The food that arrived was not like any Indian food I had seen before, and having traveled to India I have seen many dishes, most of which were far too hot for me. The menu here is innovative fresh and modern, with an expertly blended flavour of spice in all dishes. A take away lunch menu is available and the tureens of Ragini's daily curry specials are on view at the front counter. All my friends agreed the food was absolutely delicious.

Qualified chef, Ragini Dey, grew up in India, and with inspiration from the various cuisines around the country, she created a melting pot of spice cooking rather than taking the approach of one traditional region. She blends her spices to make her own unique style which was highlighted in her cookery book "Spice Kitchen". Ragini is well known to Adelaide diners, having owned and cooked at the Dhaba at Spice Kitchen restaurant on Kensington Road for 26 years. She has now moved on, and the is her latest venture. Ragini is also providing some spice cooking tips for customers at the new venue, so pop in to Naya and find out more.

The lunch specials here are very well priced, and it made a pleasant change to eat here for lunch. The amount on the plate was just enough for a light lunch, but next time I will allow more time for the tempting desserts Ragini offered us. Check out the facebook page , with food a drink combos such as a spicy snack with a stubby bottle of Kingfisher beer, India's favourite.

would make an excellent venue for a date night drink if your dating life needs some spicing up. The small table areas make for a cosy get together. If all goes well stay on for the food and you cant go wrong.
