What is Nest Box Monitoring about?
Nest boxes provide an artificial habitat for wild animals and birds and are a good supplement to tree hollows, which usually take a long time to form naturally - generally 80 years or more. Different designs of nest boxes, targeting a wide range of species have been installed throughout the council’s reserves and parks for the past 30 years. However, to date, there have been limited monitoring efforts and essential information is still required. And this is where you come in.
The use of nest boxes is essential because they provide temporary artificial hollows for nesting, protection from predators and shelter for hundreds of different Australian species.
Luckily, no tree climbing is involved - Image: Biodiverse Environmental via Sunshine Coast Council FB
Have you ever wondered who may be using the nest boxes? The Sunshine Coast Council's conservation officers and NatureWatch volunteers have also been wondering and so, after taking a look inside, are very excited to share their monitoring discovery results with you.
