A unique band with phenomenal skill and breathtaking sound
If you have never seen Naturally 7, I guarantee you will be blown away by this amazing band, as they create the sounds of a full band with only their vocal chords.

Naturally 7 are set to delight new and existing fans as they partner with World Vision to tour Australia. They are a phenomenal band that need to be seen and experienced to be believed. They will perform at the State Theatre, Sydney on Saturday 29 August.

Taking a cappella to a whole new dimension, Naturally 7's unique technique is called "vocal play". They not only achieve breathtaking harmonies, using only their voices, they create the sounds of all the instruments for the songs. There is not a "real" instrument to be seen in their concert, just the instruments created by their voices, producing the sound of a full band including drums, bass, guitar, keyboards, harmonica and horns.

The band's musical director, Roger Thomas, says their aim is take the audience on an unexpected journey. They combine elements of R&B, pop, soul and beatboxing performing songs that are varied and diverse, from soulful gospel songs to Queen's Galileo.

Roger Thomas says Naturally 7 are honoured to be partnering with World Vision. The band is travelling to Cambodia on their way to Australia, to visit World Vision projects that address the root cause of poverty. They will visit schools to engage children in music and learn about a new project that uses phonics to improve literacy rates. They will also see how the children are learning about improved nutrition, water and sanitation, so they can then teach their own families and communities.

I first saw Naturally 7 a few years ago when they were supporting Michael Buble and I was in awe of their skill and mesmerised by their exquisite sound. I have been a fan ever since.

Travelling the world touring with Michael Bublé, Naturally 7 have received standing ovations nightly in Europe, the U.K., Canada, Australia and the U.S. They are real showmen with a cheeky sense of humour, SO in addition to being blown away by their skill, their shows are entertaining and fun.

Their impressive credentials include recording with Quincy Jones and Ludicrous and appearing on Ellen and The View. They have achieved three top 10 US AC singles and hit 20 million YouTube views worldwide. Naturally 7 has a global following with signature tunes including 'Wall of Sound' and their stunning version of Coldplay's 'Fix You'. You can sample their performances of Wall of Sound here and Fix You here

To celebrate their tour to Australia, Naturally 7 recorded their version of John Farnham's iconic classic "You're the Voice". Putting their own spin on this treasured song, their version is performed with harmony and a sensitivity that penetrates the soul. John Farnham gave the band a resounding thumbs up saying "Tell those boys, they can sing!"

Interview with the band
I had the chance to interview the band's front man and musical director Roger Thomas. Considering the skill of imitating musical instruments with the vocal chords is such a unique skill, I asked Roger a few questions about the band and their music.

How was it that 7 guys with this skill managed to come together in one place? and How did you get started?Roger said he and his brother, Warren, grew up listening to their father's gospel group. They loved the sound of groups and eventually started a group in their church with 5 guys who found they could make the sounds of instruments. They began harmonising and one said, "Hey I can do this" and another said, "I can't do that but I can do this" and so they evolved from harmony to vocal play.

Can you teach this skill? Roger said as time goes on he finds it more and more interesting just how rare this skill is. He said people can be musically inclined, but not necessarily be able to imitate instruments with their voices.

Do you also play "real" instruments? Roger explained each of the band members can play instruments but surprisingly none of them imitate the instruments they play.

How does the band choose their songs? Roger said their aim is to choose songs that are uplifting, moving and positive. To many people's surprise Simon and Garfunkel were early favourites for Roger and his brother Warren. Other bands that have influenced their music are The Jackson's, Take 6, Coldplay and Rakim. Roger said they don't want to be predictable. Their aim is to take their audience on a journey of the unexpected.
