New coffee shops seem to be springing up almost daily in Fremantle. Many seem to be following the latest dark 'industrial chic' interior design fashion. However, new kid on the block, Natural Light Photography Gallery Café , has bucked the trend.

This light-filled café has an eclectic collection of chairs in a mixture of styles and bright colours, and behind the counter (which is made from offcuts of recycled timber), a cleverly placed mirror makes the room appear bigger than it already is.

Sharon Hu had dreamt of opening her own café and gallery since she became a professional photographer eight years ago. On 8th August, her dream came true when Natural Light Photography Gallery Café opened its doors for the first time.

This little café is located near Fremantle Railway Station at 3 Pakenham Street. The building is heritage listed, and the bars on the doors and a walk-in safe are evidence of its former role as a bank. The walls of the cafe are adorned with Sharon's beautiful photographs and she has turned the safe into a display area for her photography and a friend's glass art.

Allen, the barista, makes a mean cup of coffee from organic Fair Trade beans, and at $3.50 for a regular cup, you can't go wrong. The cafe's loyalty card gives you a point for every coffee or cake you buy and when you've accumulated nine points, the tenth coffee or cake is free.

All the food is freshly home-baked on the premises by Sharon and her sister. There is a weekly hot lunch special, which was chicken curry ($8) when I popped in to check the café out. There's also a selection of baguettes (e.g. mushroom and fetta for $6.50), damper (e.g. cheese and creamy corn for $2.50) and cakes and biscuits (e.g. melting moments for $2).

Opening hours are currently Monday to Friday 7.30am to 2.30pm and Saturday 10.30am to 3.30pm. Photography classes are starting on Sundays and an alfresco dining area – a timber decking with a white picket fence around it – has just been opened outside the café.

So the next time you're in Fremantle, try out this new café that's a little bit different from the rest.
