As a former TAFE teacher in Art and Design departments, I'm always interested to see works by current TAFE staff and students.
The Old Ambulance Station Gallery in Nambour is currently hosting Natural Affinity, an exhibition by 10 artists working at TAFE Qld East Coast in Burnside. This gorgeous display of ceramics, paintings, photography and art prints evokes the natural world around us.
We are all colleagues who work together in various forms, so we have an affinity with each other, and a recurring theme in all of our work was a reference to nature, says Senior teacher Andrew Bryant explaining the reason behind the exhibition title.
Andrew says it is a great feeling to collaborate as a team and to have the gallery exhibition to aim for. We are all working as teachers to support our practice of art.
There is always a purpose or need to produce art, he explains.
We love what we do but it is more about being compelled to do it.
Jade McCafferty says that her ceramic work has always been inspired by the natural world, and this collection is a closer look at a variety of fungal forms.
I wanted to focus on form and texture, so most works are unglazed, except when the glaze is needed to produce texture, she said. Her work Lamella is named for the gills of a mushroom.
Senior teacher Kerry Wilson creates art that is organic, abstract, and at the same time a realistic portrayal of the landscape outside her window. This Verdant Life celebrates the colours, textures, and spirit of nature.
The Old Ambulance Station at 80 Howard St Nambour is open from Monday to Saturday, 10am until 3pm. Natural Affinity runs until July 11. Entrance is free and all are welcome.
