Keep children safe and get to school in one piece on National Walk Safely To School Day on Friday 10 May 2024.
Gather your community and schoolmates, pop your school bag over your shoulder and stroll with parents, grandparents, carers and friends this National Walk Safely To School Day. This country-wide initiative will see kids and schools from Brisbane to Byron, Sydney to Newcastle taking part in this important road safety initiative.
Leaving the car in the garage or parking a few streets away from the school gate, can be another option to participate in the day if your house is a little too far away to walk the whole distance.
While has obvious road safety benefits, sometimes the best conversations also happen during a walk together. Find out a little more about the latest happening at school, hopes, aspirations, concerns and fears. You can also see your community, its houses, buildings and people up close and at a slower pace than you might in a car or bus. Walking, as we know, is good for our well-being to stay fit, happy and healthy.
Some may not be aware that children must always hold an adult's hand when crossing the road until they are ten years old. By holding onto children, you can stop them from running into dangerous situations. Doing this and reinforcing safe behaviour will help children learn how to become safer pedestrians.
Every year around 30 pedestrians under 15 years are killed on Australian roads. On Queensland roads alone, on average, 7 children are killed each year.
So gather your family and friends and walk to school safely for fun, fitness and safety.
