Do something special and come together on National Tree Day to help re-plant trees that were once prolific in the region. Join the Tweed Shire community to make history and leave a lasting growing legacy for future generations.

Planet Ark is celebrating 20 years of National Tree Day and Schools Tree Day - Australia's largest community tree-planting and nature care event. Tree Day is an opportunity to do something positive for your local environment and community and to reconnect with nature. National Tree Day started in 1996 and since then more than 3.8 million people have planted 22.3 million trees and plants and it's still growing.

In preparation for Tumbulgum's 150 celebrations on 12 November, the Tweed Shire Council responded quickly to the Tumbulgum Community Association's (TCA) requests to clean up the area. Now the TCA invites all residents, friends and all members of the general public to join together to help plant trees in Bluey Hill Park. What better day to get together than National Tree Day!

The TCA hopes to get everyone involved and see this small park, so much a part of our cultural history, come alive. The planting includes 100 trees, 100 lomandra and some crinum lilys.

Tweed Valley's most picturesque village
Timber cutters were attracted to the area in the mid 1800s by the stands of Australian Red Cedar. A small community grew up around the industry and a river port called Tweed Junction was established where the northern banks of the Tweed River met the Rous River.

In 1880, the locals petitioned to have the name changed to the aboriginal name of Tumbulgum. Some claim the name translates to "meeting place of the waters", whereas other suggest a reference to a large fig or wild fig tree.

Once the commercial centre of the Tweed Valley, Tumbulgum is now an historic village with National Heritage classification as many of its buildings were constructed from the local Red Cedar. A couple of kilometres out of town on the north side of the river, an historic pioneer cemetery hidden in the rainforest makes for a fascinating 'added extra' on a daytrip to Tumbulgum.

Tourist facilities include a hotel, general store, newsagency, post office, and an antiques store. The town is now a popular fishing and boating destination..
