Planet Ark commissioned a report into how Aussie kids are connecting with the great outdoors. The report has suggested that 'In a single generation there has been a profound shift from outdoor to indoor play'. National Tree Day provides a good opportunity for families to get back to exploring the great outdoors.

There are tree planting sessions taking place throughout South-East Queensland. If you decide to attend a National Tree Day event register on the Planet Ark website to be in the running to win one of five Pure and Green Organics gift packs valued at $50.00.

Most of the following tree planting activities provide refreshments, snacks or a BBQ:

•Bulimba Creek Catchment : Hair Park - Victor Street Kuraby Saturday 30 July 9.00 am-11.00 am.

•Pine Rivers Catchment : Church Street Eatons Hill (crossroad is Hidden Valley Drive) Sunday 31 July 8.00 am-11.30 am.

•Redland Council: 7-11 Creekside Circuit West - Victoria Point (along creek corridor opposite #28 Creekside Circuit West) 31 July 9.00 am-11.00 am.

In conjunction with their Regional Flavours weekend, South Bank Parklands are holding a celebrity tree planting. If you want to see celebrity chefs get their hands dirty (or dirtier), you can check it out at the Little Stanley Street Lawn at 11.15 on Sunday 31st July. If you have any gardening questions you might like to hang around to ask Jerry Coleby-Williams from Gardening Australia. Jerry will take gardening questions from the public at 1.00pm.

The following events offer the opportunity to get out and about and close to nature:

•Skippy Park Landsborough - opening day. The opening of this 'nature based' park will include free face painting, balloon sculpting, BBQ and roving performers. Participants are encouraged to bring along their bikes to check out the 'criterium track'. The event starts at 11.00am on Saturday 30 July 2011. Skippy Park is located on Old Landsborough Road Landsborough.

• Roma Street Parklands - Picnic in the Park offers free entry with live music and celebrity appearances. The event starts at 10.00am on Saturday 30 July 2011.

•Introduction to Permaculture - Three Worlds Organic Garden located at 2558 Gold Coast Highway Mermaid Beach is running an introduction to permaculture couse from 10.00 am - 11.00 am. The cost is $10.00 and you must book by telephoning 5539 3973.

As you can see there are a range of activities that get families out and about. So whether it's attending a tree planting activity or a park with free entertainment the main idea is to have fun and enjoy the great outdoors.
