National Theatre Live's production of
Prima Facie is a story of two halves, narrated in a rapid, first-person monologue by the story's protagonist, Tessa Ensler, played by Jodie Comer
(Killing Eve).
Tessa is an ambitious barrister who has risen from a council estate via Cambridge University to a prestigious London chambers where she has earned a formidable reputation as one of the finest criminal defence barristers practising in the area of sexual assault. This one-person play traverses the difficult and uncomfortable topic of sexual assault in a manner that commands attention. Jodie Comer's performance is raw, powerful, and emotionally charged, showcasing her versatility as she shifts between Tessa’s professional persona and her vulnerable side. Her command of the stage is breathtaking and the audience's investment in the outcome is palpable throughout the entire performance.
Prima Facie is a unique and important theatrical experience placing a spotlight on the failures of the justice system in cases of sexual assault. It is a thought-provoking and deeply emotional exploration of power, law, and personal trauma, made unforgettable by Comer’s moving and masterful performance. It will provoke disbelief, anger and frustration in how sexual assault cases often let survivors down. Importantly, it will provoke conversation about our legal system and what needs to be done to ensure failures are addressed and justice prevails.
