Be a part of discovering a new children's book at the same time as millions of others across Australia and New Zealand in the National Simultaneous Storytime event on 22 May 2024.

In this collective community activity, National Simultaneous Storytimes will see millions of children will be reading the same book, at the same time on the same day. Every year a picture book, written and illustrated by an Australian author and illustrator, is read simultaneously in libraries, schools, pre-schools, childcare centres, family homes, bookshops and many other places around the country.

In 2024, story time will take place from 12:00 to 12:30 to help librarians, teachers, parents, and caregivers to get millions of kids in Australia, New Zealand, and around the world to read together.

It fits within the aims of "more people, reading more books, more often." If you are going along to the story time at your local Council library or even home you might like to dress in blue, the colour theme of the book.

The book being featured in this year's event is Bowerbird Blues by Aura Parker (published by Scholastic, 2023). The delightful story is about a curious beautiful bowerbird which seeks out BLUE! We follow this feathered friend across the sea, sky and city. He swoops and snatches vibrant treasures for his collection, and soon his bower – a mix of natural and unnatural objects – attracts something greater and more fulfilling than he could ever have imagined.

Aura Parker is an Australian illustrator, writer and designer. Aura has a background in design and alongside her books, regularly exhibits illustrations, prints, paintings and handcrafted textiles.

Reading has been shown to be extremely important in helping children develop language skills and literacy, build empathy, and learn how to handle challenging feelings. Plus it's simply a fun thing to share.
