Here's a great opportunity for young and old to explore the amazing world of science, and learn a fascinating fact or two – or loads more actually – in the process.
runs from August 14th to the 22nd and gives us all the opportunity to celebrate and understand more about science, innovation, engineering, mathematics and technology.
While some of these areas might at first seem to appeal to only a certain demographic, let's remember that they greatly affect all of us. I mean, if you're sitting here reading this, you're doing so because of the science behind the technology.
If you take a break to make a cup of tea, you're able to do so because of the engineering of the fridge and the innovation it took to invent the kettle and the electricity to fire it up. The world of science is everywhere around us – and exploring it is a whole lot of fun!
There are literally hundreds and hundreds of events held across the nation during this special week of celebrating Australia's achievements and capabilities in science.
The program of events held in and around Melbourne offers something to interest everyone – and I mean everyone. You can spend a designated day of exploring all things weird and wonderful at the Melbourne Museum, or maybe head to the Queen Victoria Market to explore the relationships between food, science and the environment, hear the Cheese-Man or discover the science behind sweet-making. Sweet!
You might like to explore a market of a squirmier kind, the Market of the Mind at Federation Square. You can learn all about the brain – and get chased by a brain-hungry zombie too.
Topics are wide and varied and range from slugs and bugs to dinosaurs and slime. There's also some comedy and art, with plenty of inspiring events also happening in regional areas. Check out the program and have a good look around here.
Many schools become involved in the Science Week celebrations, so also look out for any special related projects your kids might come home with. This year's schools' theme is Australian Biodiversity and, with many of our species under threat, it's a very worthwhile one at that.
The kids (or you) might also like to have a go at a few simple science activities at this great website.
