National Science Week takes place this year from August 10-18. It's a week designed for everyone, with events, activities, talks and shows for every age group.
National Science Week provides an opportunity to acknowledge the contributions of Australian scientists' to the world of knowledge. It also aims to encourage an interest in science pursuits among the general public and to encourage younger people to become fascinated by the world we live in.
During National Science Week, there'll be lots happening across Canberra including:
The Science of Star Wars The Science of Star Wars explores the science shown in the films and how they compare to reality. Take a look at what evolution may be like in the Star Wars universe and gives theory on how a lightsaber may be built. From August 3 till Sunday, August 4 at Gamma.Con at Exhibition Park. Interactive Science at the Shine Dome InterACTive Science will take place on August 10 from 1-5pm and is a family-friendly event featuring weird and wonderful public talks, hands-on activities, live performers, exciting stalls, food trucks and more with plenty of science action available to all ages during the day. Interactive Science After Dark at the Shine Dome The InterACTive Science: After Dark event is for the older audience and runs from 6-9 pm on August 10. There'll be a host of eye-catching and interactive workshops and exhibits, weird and wonderful public talks, hands-on activities, live performers, exciting stalls, food trucks and more. Glass blowing demo: A space shuttle!
A professional team of accomplished glass artists will re-create a space shuttle in glass at the Canberra Glassworks during a super exciting and fun live Hotshop demonstration. Canberra Glassworks will hold a series of events from 15 – 18 August that will address the topic: "Destination Moon: How glass took us there!" Details here.
Wait! Wait! Save our species. A live comedy event at Smith's Alternative on August 15 from 7pm-9pm where you'll be dissecting and discussing prominent and obscure biodiversity and conservation news. Details here.
A Science Cocktail At the CSIRO Discovery Centre, Acton. Take a sip of science and see what goes on behind your favourite ethanol based drink. Taking place on August 16 from 6.00pm-8.30pm. Details here.
Greenlight for Girls Day
This one day event demonstrates the link between Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics (STEM) to everything around us in a fun & interactive way. 100-150 girls aged 10-16 are invited to come and join the fun and be inspired by hands-on workshops led by role-model professionals in STEM. Taking place on August 17 from 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM at the ANU College of Engineering and Computer Science. Details here.
Mt. Stromlo Public Astronomy Night
Mount Stromlo Observatory in conjunction with the Canberra Astronomical Society invite the Canberra community to attend our public observing night during National Science Week. Come and see the rings of Saturn, the craters of the moon, and beautiful star clusters and nebulae. On Friday, August 16 from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM. Details here.
