Proteas are actually South African flowering plants also known as sugarbushes. Due to their low maintenance, low water requirements and year-round colour, they are popular in the Australian native garden landscape.

Their long lasting flowers and colour also make them popular as cut flowers. For cricket fans, you might be interested to know that the South African national cricket team is nicknamed the "Proteas".
