Every summer, and indeed so often during the other seasons, we have need to call upon the services of our Firefighters. These people come from every walk of life, and volunteer to go into areas of great danger to fight bushfires and wildfires around the nation.

It's also worth remembering too that our Firefighters are called upon to step in and assist in accidents, and other incidents that one doesn't always associate with fire, but with danger. For instance only a month or so ago, three firefighters were badly burned and in fact are still receiving treatment which will be ongoing, in an attempt to save a person's life who had barricaded himself in his apartment and threatened to do harm to himself. What eventuated made the news headlines insofar as an unforeseen accident occurred when drums of flammable liquid exploded and the firefighters were placed in a life threatening situation themselves. Their recuperation continues.

Our firefighters are ordinary people who are asked to do, and who do, extraordinary things every day of every week, They give up their time, they spend many hours, many days and many months a year in upgrading their skills, and they are ever-ready to jump to attention when needed. They ensure their equipment is in good knick and always in tiptop condition, ready for action. You know our firefighters by the bright yellow uniforms.

This year, on February 28th, the firefighters of the nation are holding a "National Red Balloon Day". It's a simple way of saying "thank you" for all the firefighters, both of our local communities as well as those from other centres, as well as interstate.

How simple is it? Merely buy a $1 red balloon. For more information contact National Red Balloon Day . Then there are other small venues where you can purchase a balloon. Rainy Day Books at the Basin[/LINK], cnr Forest Road and Mountain Highway, at the roundabout, will be participating and selling the $1 red balloons.

Keep a watch out for the old Red Fire Engine, on loan with compliments from Como Gardens of the Basin.

Fly a red balloon from your fence or business, or a ribbon from your car to show how much we appreciate our Firefighters across the nation!

Support the on February 28th.
