The National Multicultural Festival is back in 2023

Canberra has an unfair reputation for being a little, ahem, bland and boring, but the National Multicultural Festival blows that myth out of the water. It's a festival filled with fun, food and flair where you can't help but get swept up in the joy and excitement! After a Covid hiatus, the 25th National Multicultural Festival is ready to once again bring it's vibrant, carnival atmosphere to Canberra's city centre. Whether you're a seasoned fan of the 'multi-culti' or looking to experience it for the first time, here is a run-down on what to expect at the 2023 festival.

When is the festival on?

The National Multicultural Festival 2023 will run over three days from Friday 17 to Sunday 19 February. For s full program of events, check out the details here.

Where is the festival?

The festival will fill the Canberra city centre with a kaleidoscope of fun and flavour and this year, it's growing! As well as the area around Gareema Place, the festival will expand into Glebe Park.

What are the highlights?

The multi-culti celebrates the unique cultures of the 170 nationalities that call Canberra home and the finest food, music and dance of many of them is on show throughout the festival. With several stages, roaming performers, cooking demonstrations and streets filled with succulent food, there's something for everyone at the festival.

Many stalls include cultural activities like art, craft or national costumes so make sure you bring a sense of adventure and try to experience as much as you can! Make sure you don't miss the huge street parade that has become a highlight of the festival. Come with an appetite and some patience for queuing because the food stands are not to be missed. The prices and wait times vary but if you are keen on some of the festival's cult snacks, plan to wait (it will absolutely be worth it!).

Headline acts for the 2023 National Multicultural Festival have been announced and it's a stellar line-up. You can expect to see Mitch Tambo's amazing performances in Gamilaraay language; the African American gospel, Motown, big funk and soul energy of Lisa Hunt; multi-ARIA Award winning children's music artist Justine Clarke and Punjabi-Australian singer and superstar Parvyn along with dozens of cultural performances throughout the festival.

Who should go?

The Multicultural Festival is suitable for absolutely everyone! It's free to visit and the entertainment and activities are free too. From the littlest kids to your family elders, you can find activities and experiences to put smiles on every face. The festival stalls often offer art, crafts and the opportunity to try on traditional dress. The stage music and dance performances are suitable for all ages and the food caters to every taste so make sure you try some! Saturday afternoon and evening are very busy so if you have small kids who aren't too keen on crowds, aim to visit early or on Friday or Sunday.

What else do I need to know?

This event is uber-popular and during busy times, the crowds can be hectic. If you prefer a more relaxed experience, Friday and Sunday are generally quieter.

Parking is available in the Canberra Centre (paid) and also in some carparks off London Circuit although in 2023, this will be affected by roadworks. The Allinga Street, City tram stop is a short walk from the Multicultural Festival and the Bus Interchange is nearby too.
