While the myth of the 'Canberra Bubble' stubbornly floats around, the truth about Canberra is that far from being an out of touch land of politics, the city can throw a damned good party. The National Multicultural Festival has been a Canberra favourite for over 20 years and continues to grow year after year as one of the Canberra calendar's biggest events. The festival is a celebration of diversity as well as a time for the Canberra community to come together and share cultural traditions and food.
In 2020, the festival will run from 21 to 23 February, making the most of the last of summer's long summer days and balmy nights. There is a full program of events over the three-day festival showcasing cultural performances across six different stages. Saturday is parade day where over 2000 performers on floats and on foot take to the city streets to sing, dance and play in a flurry of colour, sound and celebration. From pipe bands to lion dancers and everything in between, the National Multicultural Festival's parade is the highlight of the entertainment schedule and on the must-do list if you plan to visit the festival.
As well as the programmed entertainment, there are plenty of activities at the many display tents which exhibit different countries, regions and cultural groups. You'll find something interesting for the whole family - try on some traditional dress, take a turn playing some instruments, research your family history or even plan your next holiday.
And then, of course, there is the food. Oh, the food! Whether you like spice and sizzle, classic comfort food or something in between, the National Multicultural Festival has you well and truly covered. You can travel the world on a plate and whether you want to find a dish that reminds you of home, eat something that takes you back to a holiday memory, or just try something you've never had before. Queuing at some of the stalls and food trucks can be hectic but there are so many delicious delicacies just waiting to be discovered, it's well worth checking out as many as you can!
The National Multicultural Festival is a positive and joyous celebration of Canberra's diversity. This is an event suitable for the entire family and is free to attend (food and some activities are extra). A highlight of the Canberra event calendar that shouldn't be missed, whether you're a local or a visitor.
