The National Institute of Circus Arts (NICA) presents The Landscape Project

Get ready for the National Institute of Circus Arts (NICA) latest student showcase, The Landscape Project; circus as a reaction to space, time and intensity.

NICA is Australia's Centre of Excellence for training in contemporary circus arts, and the only institute in the country to offer the Bachelor of Circus Arts. Each year, fifteen new students join the intensive performing arts program in Prahran, welcoming applicants from all around Australia and overseas.

Graduates of NICA have gone on to pursue exciting careers both locally and internationally and have contributed to the development of Melbourne's vibrant circus arts industry. NICA's course is accredited by Swinburne University of Technology.

Part of the student's program is to perform choreographed shows in front of a live public audience. This summer, NICA's final year circus artists will perform The Landscape Project; circus as a reaction to space, time and intensity.

The troupe has spent some 30 hours a week, for the last three years, honing in on their individual circus and performing arts abilities. In The Landscape Project; their latest and final showcase, these talented individuals were each asked to respond to the question "How do we engage with our landscape to unearth the show waiting to be exposed?". To answer the question, each student crafted a circus act, whether it be aerial rope, bottle walking, hula hoop, group acrobatics, slackline, tumbling, trampoline or clowning.

Under the guidance of accomplished Australian director, performer and choreographer Debra Batton, National Institute of Circus Arts (NICA) presents The Landscape Project; circus as a reaction to space, time and intensity playfully investigates the concept of circus as a physical and mental landscape.

The Landscape Project transposes the qualities of a traditional landscape panorama to the circus environment, asking us to consider the stage as our landscape. The journey of the human eye through each scene guides us to ponder depth, foreground, focal points, surfaces and atmosphere. The production proposes the landscape as a frame for each young artist's vital contribution to the circus environment.

This is your chance to see the circus stars of tomorrow perform to the very best of their abilities in individual acts as well as ensemble performances.

The Landscape Project; circus as a reaction to space, time and intensity will take place at NICA's own state-of-the-art circus centre in Prahran. Every NICA showcase is a delight to watch, and a very reasonably priced day out for families or friends. PG rated. Book your tickets HERE .
