Australia's emerging circus stars perform live in Prahran
Acrobatic students learning the ways of the circus will showcase their amazing talent to the public this November. The National Institute of Circus Arts (NICA) presents Born in Sawdust.
NICA Born in Sawdust
NICA is the only educational centre in Australia to offer the Bachelor of Circus Arts. Each year, NICA's state-of-the-art National Circus Centre in Prahran opens its doors to showcase the graduate student troupe's talent and ability to a public audience.
NICA's 2015 Showcase, Born in Sawdust, will take you back through the history of circus. Derived from a Russian phase used to describe someone born into the circus, Born in Sawdust celebrates the rich history of one of the most entertaining wonders of the performing arts world.
Directed by internationally acclaimed director Gavin Robins, this choreographed production incorporates digital technology with live circus skills. You will see projected silhouettes which bring forth shadows of the past into performers of the present. Expect daring circus acts incorporated within an enchanting story that weaves the old world with the new.
This isn't the first time director Gavin Robins has choreographed a NICA performance. In 2009, Gavin Robins directed NICA's third year ensemble, called At First Sight. Gavin is considered a big name in the physical theatre industry, having performed and worked on large scale shows such as Sydney Olympic Games Opening Ceremony, the opening of the 2012 Eurovision Song contest, DreamWorks Arena Spectacular How to Train Your Dragon and King Kong the musical, for which he won a Helpmann Award for Outstanding Theatrical Achievement for movement direction.
Gavin ploughs his knowledge and experience into NICA's 2015 Showcase; Born in Sawdust. This is your opportunity to see Australia's future circus stars perform big top tricks such as; Highwire, Handstands, Aerial Hoop, Object Manipulation and Clowning, Dance Trapeze, Tumbling, Aerial Straps, Hula Hoops, Multicord, and Slings.
