Namatjira is a performance which tells the story of indigenous artist Albert Namatjira. Wait. Before you go to read another article let me tell you this show is like nothing you are expecting. It is not boring, mundane, or predictable. Whether you are interested in watercolours, indigenous culture, Australian history – or none of the above – you simply must see this show.

I arrived at Her Majesty's Theatre on Saturday where Namatjira is showing until 12 May 2012. I didn't know a great deal about the play, nor was I particularly excited by the prospect. I was mainly going to keep my parents company.

The first scene begins with a live painting of Namatjira taking place on stage. All of a sudden Namatjira, played by Trevor Jamieson, comes to life. At once you are captivated by his storytelling, the sparkle in his eye, his cheeky humour, and contagious laughter.

Jamieson's performance is one of the greatest acts I have ever experienced, if not the best. His poignant humour and flawless delivery will have you in stitches, while feeling like you've just been slapped in the face with a reality check. He draws you in with his warmth, facial expressions, and incredible impersonations and acting. You are transported to another time and place, and are caught up in a story of tragedy, loss, love, mistakes, and relationships that beg for barriers to be broken and wrongs to be made right. And then you are uncomfortably made aware of the parallels of the society we live in today that cannot be overlooked.

Jamieson plays numerous characters whilst narrating but never once loses the audience. With the help of co-star Derik Lynch the two men engage and entertain, seamlessly moving between storytelling, cross-dressing, and filling the theatre with incredibly beautiful music and singing.

This play will enchant you, captivate you, challenge and inspire you. It will make you laugh and bring you close to tears. The music, art, and acting are rivalled by none. The story itself is one that must be heard. The connection between stage and audience is something that cannot be described, only experienced.
