The best tex mex and street food in south east melbourne
Nacho's Cantina has been a South Eastern Melbourne institution in Tex Mex food for the past 37 years. It has changed location on occasion but the two most current locations are Mount Waverley and Aspendale.
My family and friends have been using Nacho's as a meeting ground since the late 90s.
Not matter the location, the atmosphere, the staff and the food remain exceptional. And of course, the extensive margarita list will have you drooling - from the Love Potion (which is a delicious mix of strawberries, coconut liqueur and cream) to the very potent Cadillac, which is a mix of aged tequila, Grand Marnier and Grenadine.
Margaritas come in a standard size or a 'jug'. We have always called them 'fishbowls'. They're four standard drinks together and served in an over-sized glass. Word of warning - if you're having a fishbowl of the Cadiallac to yourself, you probably won't be able to stand up at the end of your evening!
The menu has changed a bit over the years but there are some staples such as the nachos with your choice of standard and non-standard toppings such as mushrooms or beef.
My new favourite on their menu is the Street Food option. Claire Horton, a long-time staff member of Nacho's says, "we trialed a few different items. Some things didn't work and so we got rid of them but the Street Food was popular."
I can see why. We had the mushroom quesadilla which comes served on a wooden board with three toppings. The outer was just crispy, the sauces added additional wow and the mushroom melt-in-the-mouth.
Another friend ordered three soft tacos with beef. They were piled high with tender beef, red cabbage and corn salsa. He realised ordering three was a mistake - they were that filling!
Nacho's Cantina has a great kids menu and families love it here too. This Tex Mex restaurant is really popular so definitely book ahead - especially on weekends. See the website here.
