I hear far too many people saying that they don't like the beach because of silly reasons that they've made up in their head. It's about time that some myths about the beach are debunked and never mentioned again.

**1) You will get sunburnt
**
Being out in the sun doesn't necessarily mean you will get sunburnt. You just have to stick to the classic slogan - slip, slop, slap! Simply wear a hat, suncreen, protective clothing, and sunglasses. You can even purchase a small, cheap tent from shops like Big W or Kmart to take onto the sand and keep the sun off even more.

**2) You will get eaten by a shark
**
The media does a great job of publicising and emphasising shark attacks in Australian waters. But it just isn't something that we really need to be too concerned about. Sharks don't typically come into shallow areas, and if they do, it isn't with the motivation to attack.

Check out this list of 25 shocking things more likely to kill you than a shark . Even coconuts made the list!

**3) You will be seen by a pervert
**
Believe it or not, lifeguards don't only watch the water. They also keep an eye on the esplanade and foreshore to ensure that the public space is being used appropriately and respectfully.

If you ever feel that there is inappropriate behaviour occurring around you, you can report it to the lifeguards. You can download the 'Beachsafe' app to see which beaches are patrolled.
