Scenic detour well worth the drive

Located about 60 km south of Adelaide near the town of Myponga, the Myponga Reservoir is bounded by a concrete arch dam wall which was completed in 1962. When approaching the reservoir from the Adelaide direction, there is a car-parking area and lookout. I would encourage people to take advantage of the chance to stop and enjoy the view from here because no stopping is allowed on the reservoir wall.

The road continues down the hillside, across the reservoir wall and up the other side. The experience of driving across is amazing and I felt a few moments thrill in case the reservoir wall should fail and allow us to be swept off the side down the magnificent slope into the valley. Then I put my trust in SA water engineering and maintenance that this would not happen.

The Myponga reservoir capacity is about 26,800 megalitres, and Myponga had its own water treatment plant (built in 1993) the water from Myponga was transferred to the Happy Valley Reservoir.
