Brisbane's Myer Christmas Windows are very much a part of a traditional Brisbane Christmas, although not quite as iconic as the Melbourne version. Now their full animated glory has been unveiled to the public and can be appreciated by adults and wondered at by children, with their noses pressed against the panes, until 6th January 2016.


This year's windows are based on the highly popular Little Dog and the Christmas Wish by Australian children's author, Corinne Fenton, who is the author of 25 books for children. Her classic picture book Queenie: One Elephant's Story, illustrated by Peter Gouldthorpe, was an Honour Book in the 2007 Children's Book Council of Australia (CBCA) Book of the Year Awards. Little Dog and the Christmas Wish is illustrated by Robin Cowcher,a former art director at The Age newspaper.

The book features the adventures of Little Dog, who is lost in the city of Melbourne on Christmas Eve, and wishing to find his way home to his best friend, Jonathan. It is set in the 1950s and all of the nostalgic and gentle detail of Robin Cowcher's delightful illustrations has been brought faithfully to life in Myer's Christmas windows by the talented team at Stage ONE, who have created these windows for the past 21 years.


If you've ever visited or lived in Melbourne you'll enjoy spotting all the famous Melbourne landmarks like Flinders Street Station and Richmond's Skipping Girl Vinegar Sign, along with other well-known Melbourne sights like the distinctive Melbourne trams.


Hundreds of hours of research and thousands of hours of meticulous work have gone into creating the extraordinary level of detail in this year's windows. From the stained glass and clocks of Flinders Street Station and the printed newspaper being read by a Melbourne commuter to patterned carpets, string shopping bags and period costumes made with authentic 1950s fabrics, you will be amazed. My favourite detail is the happy paper-crowned drunk, who's obviously been enjoying himself a little too much at the office Christmas party. Try explaining that to the kids.


An integral part of Brisbane's The Wonder of Christmas , the windows are Myer's gift to the city and will be illuminated from 7.30am to 1am every day until 6 January 2016.


The Wonder of Christmas also includes the famously festive Myer Christmas Parade and Pantomime , which will wind its way through from the Edward Street end of Queen Street Mall at 6.30pm from 11 to 20 December. This year expect a myriad of performers, elves, Santa and his reindeer.


You can also check out the decorations that are already taking pride of place throughout the Mall and don't forget the Gold Lotto City Hall Light Spectacular just off the mall in King George Square from 11 to 25 December.
