My Solo Exchange Diary is the Eisner-award nominated sequel series to Nagata Kabi's bestselling and award-winning autobiographical manga
My Lesbian Experience with Loneliness (2017).
My Solo Exchange Diary Vol. 1 is 168-pages long and was published in English by Seven Seas Entertainment on 6 May 2018. The book is written as a diary exchange between Nagata's past self and future self.
There were some heartbreaking scenes in this book between Nagata and her mother. Nagata wants nothing more than for her parents to be proud of her achievements and is absolutely desperate for their approval. Unfortunately, her relationship with them became strained after the success of
My Lesbian Experience with Loneliness. Nagata knows that she embarrassed her parents with her book which makes her feel terrible. Her negative feelings spiral which make it difficult for her to feel proud of the success of her book and her achievements as a manga creator.
My Solo Exchange Diary is a good book that will take you on a roller coaster of emotions. It can be brutally sad in parts, like when Nagata talks about the time she tried to end it all by cutting her neck with scissors but failed to cut deep enough. She also talks about her parents and the lack of love she feels toward them and the coldness they feel toward her. There were some positive moments in the book as well. We see Nagata taking some first steps towards becoming an independent adult and the book ends with her asking her future self how she is coping. I'm looking forward to reading more about Nagata Kabi and her quest to find self-acceptance and love in her next book.
Summary: Nagata Kabi struggles to adjust to the idea of living alone and wrestles with feelings of guilt after her previous book’s success makes her parents uncomfortable.
