My Shadow is Pink is a children's book written and illustrated by Australian writer and illustrator Scott Stuart. It is 32 pages long and was published by Larrikin House on 1 August 2020. My Shadow is Pink tells the story of a little boy who has a secret. He is not like his dad, who has a blue shadow, his is quite different - it is pink! He is happiest when he is playing with things that are considered "not for boys" like ponies, fairies, princesses and pink toys. But his most favourite thing to do is to put on a dress but he always stops when his dad walks in and stares. The little boy is embarrassed at first that his shadow is pink. He thinks he needs to stop wearing a dress so he can fit in with the other kids. But then his dad encourages him to not worry about what other people think and to always be himself.
My Shadow is Pink is a beautiful book that explores toxic masculinity, gender identity, fatherhood, gender stereotypes, diversity, childhood bullying, and self-expression. Stuart was inspired to write the book when he was forced to confront his own thoughts and views on gender stereotypes when his three-year-old son developed a love for Disney's Frozen and the main character, Elsa. One day, his son came home from school crying, because someone at school had teased him for liking Elsa, and had told him that Frozen was only for girls. From that day forward, Stuart made a promise to himself to always support his son and the things he loved, even if they challenged gender stereotypes he had known all his life.
When Frozen 2 was released in theatres, his son asked if he could go dressed up as Elsa. Stuart agreed and decided to dress up as Elsa to support him. He filmed the moment and shared it on Tik Tok which ended up going viral and racking up over 21 million views. Stuart has since then built an online platform where he continues to post videos where he talks about his experiences as a father and shares his thoughts on parenting, gender stereotypes, childhood bullying and toxic masculinity.
My Shadow is Pink is a fun, bright and sparkly book with a positive parenting message in it to love and accept your kids for who they are. For more information about Scott Stuart and to watch some of his web videos check out his Instagram.
