Gumiho is a shape-shifting fox spirit that appears in the folktales and legends of Korea. It is much like a vampire in Western lore. A
gumiho can turn into human. In
My Roomate is a Gumiho (2021,
Shin Woo-yeo (played by
Jang Ki-yong) is a
gumiho that has been alive for almost 1000 years. To turn into a human, Woo-yeo must change his fox marble from red into blue by siphoning human energies. He needs to turn his marble into blue, by collecting human energy and storing it inside his fox marble, before reaching his 1000th birthday, otherwise, he will disappear into thin air.
One night, a drunk girl,
Lee Dam (played by
Lee Hye-ri,) stumbled on Woo-yeo and made Woo-yeo spit his marble out of his body and Dam accidentally swallowed the marble. Woo-yeo had to bring Dam to his house as Dam passed out while drunk. In the morning, Woo-yeo told Dam that he was a
gumiho and she had swallowed his fox marble. He asked Dam to stay at his house while he figured out how to get his fox marble back.
Lee Dam didn’t know that actually, Woo-yeo knew how to get the marble out. Woo-yeo liked to have Lee Dam as a company in his big house where he has been living by himself. Woo-yeo doesn’t have any friends, only
Yang Hye-sun (played by
Kang Han-na), a 700-year-old
gumiho that turned into human 4 years ago.
Woo-yeo accidentally killed her girlfriend while he was living in
Joseon era. Woo-yeo closed his heart to anyone and anything and chose to live by himself after that incident. In order to become human, a
gumiho needs to experience all different kinds of feelings that humans have, such as jealousy, anger and more. Woo-yeo never had the chance to experience those feelings because he always tried to avoid another human beings until he met Lee Dam. With the help of the Mountain Spirit (played by
Go Kyung-pyo), later on, Lee Dam realised why Woo-yeo hasn’t been able to turn himself into a human.
While living together, Woo-yeo and Lee Dam are attracted to each other and help each other to overcome their struggles. But their love has to face huge obstacles as Gye Sun-woo (played by Bae In-hyuk), Lee Dam's senior in college who is a ladies' favourite, also falls in love with Lee Dam.
This 16-episode South Korean drama series was based on a webtoon by Na and was directed by Park Joon Hwa and Nam Sung Woo. Yang Hye-sun's character is very dominant as the second lead actress in this drama. She was really struggling to adapt to life as a human and made a lot of funny mistakes that made for a good giggle while watching this drama series.
You can see Jang Ki-yong in another South Korean drama,
Come and Hug Me, Bae In-hyuk in
The Story of Park Marriage Contract and Go Kyung-pyo in
Love in Contract. My Roomate is a Gumiho can be watched through online streaming services.
