Recently awarded the MICHELIN Bib Gourmand,
My Own Cafe in George Town serves up one of the best Penang asam laksa I've tasted. It is located at 2 Lebuh Cannon, near the famous Armenian Street, and hence easily accessible for both tourists and locals alike. It is also Muslim-friendly as neither pork, lard nor alcohol are used to cook the three dishes on its menu. Yes, that's correct, only three - asam laksa, lemak laksa and spring rolls!
Asam laksa
The asam laksa was perfect with a well-balanced spicy and sour soup. The broth was rather thick too. This, combined with fresh fish, vegetables and noodles, set my taste buds tingling that afternoon. I also ordered a set of six vegetarian fried spring rolls. Although delicious on their own, the spring rolls were even more delightful when dipped in the laksa soup (as recommended by the chef). As for drinks, you have a choice of juice or coffee. I opted for the apple juice which I thought was an unusual accompaniment for a bowl of laksa. Nevertheless, it worked beautifully.
Spring rolls
The shop is family-run. I was served by a younger gentleman who brought out the juice, an older gentleman the laksa and a lady the spring rolls. They were all very friendly. Business hours are from 10am to 4pm every day except Wednesdays. Payment is by cash only, so do make sure you've got a couple of notes with you. My meal costs RM25 in total. Feel free to follow their
Facebook page for more information.
