To the delight of both locals and visitors, Blacktown City Council is once again hosting ' My Lords and Ladies Medieval Fayre ' as part of its annual City festival. The family-friendly affair will be held at Nurragingy Recreation Reserve, Knox Road, Doonside, over two exciting days.

On Saturday 18 and Sunday 19 May 2013, from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm, the popular leisure destination will be transformed into the dark and delightful world of the Middle Ages as if by magic.

Join kings, queens, ladies, lords and knights as they come together in an elaborate display of royal pageantry. Many of the Fayre's participants, who sport stylish and time-accurate attire, bring former feudal fashions back to life and provide you and the kids with the unique and exciting opportunity to don your own fancy dress as members of feudal nobility.


Hire, buy, or go one better and create your own costumes for the affair. The latter is one school holiday project sure to keep you and the kids occupied.

Only a short walk from Doonside Railway Station down Cross Street and across Knox Road, the Medieval Fayre teems with weird and wonderful street entertainers including "an evil witch" and "a real-life Giant!"

With free admission, the Fayre features activities such as period jewellery making and sword making for the kids. Max Webber Library also runs workshops for the little ones about all things medieval.

Other participant groups, such as the Company of Diverse Crafters and the Medieval Fightclub, present interactive demonstrations of life in the Dark Ages. With colourful pavilions, campsites and tent displays featuring food and textile production, you and the kids will feel worlds away. But more importantly, you're guaranteed to have loads of fun and learn something new!


Last year, Zac and Kitty were enthralled by the different displays. They were bursting with questions and couldn't wait to try on helmets and swords for size (see below). Stallholders were just as eager to welcome us into their world and share with us their passion for the days of yore.




Renowned theatrical and combat groups, including Sword Play and the Danelaw Medieval Fighting Society, present combat displays throughout the day. In addition to these, be sure not to miss the key highlight of the Medieval Fayre - the "International Jousting Competition" - at 11:00 am and 2:00 pm each day. The full-contact combat takes place between armoured knights and their valiant steeds, and is sure to keep you on the edge of your seat.


Camel and pony rides provide great photo opportunities and the chance to get up close and personal with some of the animals at the show. Though the queues for the camel rides may seem tedious, trust me, the experience is well worth the wait!


You can purchase lunch from a variety of food stalls or opt to bring your own. Please note that seating is limited, so pack a picnic blanket if sitting on the grass makes you itch. Otherwise, park your posterior on the lawn and take in the magical milieu.
